What are the common silk fabrics? What are the characteristics?

2026-05-09

There are many varieties of real silk, which can be roughly divided into 14 major categories and 43 subcategories, so, First, let's introduce some common categories of real silk~

    Plain satin

Plain satin: a conventional fabric in silk fabrics, with a bright satin surface that is very noble, smooth to the touch, and dense in structure; This is the silk fabric that many people have in mind, the material for making cheongsams, with a smooth luster like pearls and bright colors!

This fabric feels great when held in your hand, so when selling satin clothes, buyer satisfaction is usually high; This fabric is prone to wrinkling, so after ironing, it becomes smooth and can perfectly shine its luster; Satin is a very noble fabric, and in fact, some designs made with this fabric are really beautiful, noble and highly textured. Plain satin is suitable for making Dresses, scarves, shirts, etc.

    Elastin crepe satin

Similar to plain satin is elastic satin. Compared with plain satin, it has a certain degree of elasticity, is not easy to wrinkle, and is easy to maintain, making up for the shortcomings of pure silk. Suitable for making scarves, cheongsams, etc. Elastic silk crepe: composed of 90% -95% mulberry silk and 5% -10% spandex, it is an interwoven fabric.

Its characteristics are good elasticity, comfort, relatively small shrinkage rate, and unique style. This is not 100% real silk, it has added other ingredients and the fabric has elasticity and good drape. It depends on the proportion of real silk. The higher the proportion of real silk, the more it feels like satin and the more beautiful its luster.

    Double crepe

Double crepe: It is a silk fabric made from mulberry silk as raw material. Its characteristic is that the silk surface presents fine wrinkles in both directions, so it is called crepe. It is an important variety of silk production and export in China, accounting for more than 15% and 10% of the total production and export of real silk.

Due to its many characteristics, good quality, and wide range of uses, double crepe is highly popular and continues to sell well. Suitable for making shirts, skirts, etc.

    Electric spinning

Electric spinning is a type of silk fabric made from mulberry silk, woven in a plain weave. Named after the use of factory silk and electric silk weaving machines instead of traditional silk and wood weaving machines. For example: Hangfang (produced in Hangzhou). Shao Fang (produced in Shaoxing), Hu Fang (produced in Huzhou), etc. The electric Textile Material is tightly and finely clean, with a soft and crisp feel, a soft luster, and a smooth and comfortable wearing experience.

Heavy duty fabrics are mainly used for summer shirts, skirts, and children's clothing fabrics; Medium can be used as clothing lining; Lightweight items can be used as underskirts, headscarves, etc. It is a type of fabric. Thin electrospinning can be used as lining for wool, cashmere, coats, silk dresses, etc., while slightly thicker ones can be used for shirts, dresses, etc.

    Taff silk

Taff silk: a type of silk fabric woven from ripe silk. Good luster, delicate and crisp, feels like umbrella cloth, especially prone to wrinkling and forming creases, so it is not suitable for folding and heavy pressure, commonly used in roll packaging. There are three types of silk: plain taffeta, striped taffeta, and floral taffeta, all of which are traditional varieties famous in China and are also specialty varieties of Suzhou and Hangzhou in China.

Suitable for making umbrella covers, skirts, and shirts. Before entering the water, it was really tough, but after entering the water, it was unbearable to see. Not suitable for novice silk enthusiasts, it's quite troublesome to take care of. The production process of taffeta is complex, with limited output and limited supply, which makes it even more precious and rare.

    Heavy Crepe

Heavy Crepe: A thick silk fabric made by combining multiple warp and weft threads and reinforcing the weft threads. It has a style similar to double crepe, but much thicker than double crepe, with at least four times the thickness of the common 02 double crepe. It is a thickened crepe fabric made of mulberry silk.

Heavy, pronounced as "chong" here, means repetition, overlap, and in terms of craftsmanship, it is the process of weaving multiple strands of twisted yarn after splicing.

    Smooth wrinkles

Smooth Wrinkle: Made of synthetic silk, the fabric structure adopts a plain weave variation, especially with shuttle weaving to adapt to the high twist of the silk. Under the condition of strong twisting of the warp and weft in the previous process, the warp and weft yarns twist after dyeing and finishing shrinkage, and the fabric surface has a distinct crease feeling. The finished product is rich in natural expansion and contraction, and the interweaving points are firm, not easy to loosen, and tear. The fabric surface has through holes, such as yarn and linen style. In addition to the advantages of softness, smoothness, breathability, and easy washing, the product has stronger comfort and better drape.

The uniqueness of this fabric lies in its printed and embroidered patterns, which can be used to make clothes for women of different ages. Later, due to the rise of the chiffon, Qiaoqi, and Zogu series, it was abandoned by people.

    Qiao Qi

Qiaoqi (yarn): Qiaoqi, also known as Qiaoqi yarn or Qiaoqi crepe, is named after the French word (Georgette). It is very similar to the pattern of chiffon, I mean synthetic chiffon. The difference between silk chiffon and Qiaoqi can be distinguished at a glance. Qiaoqi is lightweight and transparent, with a soft and elastic feel, good breathability and drape, slightly raised silk particles, and loose structural pores.

In fact, there are quite a few specifications for Qiaoqi crepe, mainly depending on the thickness of the mulberry silk raw material, the number of silk threads combined, the amount of twist, and the warp and weft density. Therefore, the thickness of ordinary chiffon varies, with common ones being 4.5 meters and 12 meters, not to mention the arrangement of warp and weft lines. I personally prefer heavy trees that are not transparent, hang smoothly, not easily wrinkled, and easy to maintain.

In the early days, Qiaoqi was real silk Qiaoqi. Later, artificial fibers were introduced, which can be divided into silk Qiaoqi yarn, synthetic silk Qiaoqi yarn, polyester Qiaoqi yarn, and interwoven Qiaoqi yarn according to the raw materials used. If only one twist direction (such as S twist) is used for the warp yarn, the resulting Qiaoqi yarn is called warp Qiaoqi yarn, which presents irregular wrinkles in the warp direction with concave convex pleats.

Kogen yarn

Kogen Sha: Ogen Sha, also known as Kogen Sha, also known as Ogen Sha, or Ouhe Sha. The English name is: Organza. Organza is not necessarily made of real silk, there are also distinctions between synthetic fibers and real silk. Many shopping malls or Taobao stores use synthetic organza because it is difficult to distinguish between real silk organza and synthetic organza with the naked eye.

Real silk organza has hardness, but not as hard as synthetic fibers. Real silk organza has a softer hand feel, does not prick the skin, is slightly stiff, but not as stiff as synthetic organza. The disadvantage is that it is very prone to breakage and snagging. Chemical fiber is much better. Organza is easy to penetrate and suitable for making wedding dresses and dresses, but it must be lined.
